PUBLIC TRANSIT DAY | WLRN On Friday Dec. 9, South Florida residents are invited to take public transit to work and back. It's part of a public strategy organized by folks from Radical Partners and Urban Impact Lab. 

PUBLIC SPACE CHALLENGE | MIAMI HERALD Even if you love your car, kiss it goodbye for a day and say hello to the bus or the train. That’s what the Miami-Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works is asking you to do Friday as part of the first-ever “Public Transit Day.”

PUBLIC TRANSIT DAY | MIAMI TODAY Building upon the steps Miami’s leaders have taken, Ms. Fishman-Lipsey and Ms. Viciedo have joined with Miami-Dade as well as Broward officials to declare Dec. 9 as “Public Transit Day” and encourage everyone to use public transportation for the day.

PARK(ING) DAY | MIAMI HERALD As urban development increases in South Florida, Miamians are less likely to find green spaces among the gray buildings. Last week’s PARK(ing) Day challenged creative types around Miami to find new ways to turn city blocks into public open spaces.

PARK(ING) DAY | THE NEW TROPIC Initially founded by Rebar, a San Francisco art and design firm in 2005, PARK(ing) day  calls out the need for more open spaces in urban areas. The group started by renting out a metered parking spot for two hours.

But it’s more likely that you’ll skip all those steps and go straight for your car keys or a ride share.

PURPLE LINE | GOOD Wish your city had better public transit? Here's one way to help get your neighbors on board as fellow advocates: build a temporary, fake train station to give a real-life demonstration of what a bigger system might look like. 

PURPLE LINE | WLRN Over the weekend, public transit advocates in Miami built a temporary train station along an imaginary transit line. They called it the Purple Line, sticking with the theme of Miami’s other two commuter rail lines, the Orange and the Green. 

PURPLE LINE | WLRN The temporary "station" will span some 20,000 feet, and besides business tabling, you can count on food trucks, flash mobs, and performances by the Front Yard Theater Collective

PURPLE LINE | MIAMI NEW TIMES  will present a pop-up train-station installation of the same name, complete with art, music, and food. “We’re trying to show artistically what can happen when you have an improved transit system.
